Edition:8/8EXHIBITED:2009,Niubi Newbie Kids II,Schoeni Art Gallery Hong Kong7 -9 Sep 2009,SH Contemporary,Shanghai12 - 15 Jan 2012,Art Stage Singapore,Singapore17 Sep – 7 Oct 2012,Attitude—In Celebration of Schoeni Art Gallery’s 20th Anniversary,Parkview Green Gallery,BeijingNov 25 2012 – 3 Feb 2013,Latitude/Attitude—In Celebration of Schoeni Art Gallery’s 20th Anniversary,Schoeni Art Gallery,Hong KongThis work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Schoeni Art Gallery,Hong KongForever Moment by Cai LeiCai Lei is a young millennial artist born in Changchun,Jilin Province,China.In 2005,he enrolled in the Sculpture Department at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.His time there as a student revealed a particular acumen for various types of sculpture.His work Clothing won first prize in 2007 from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.In 2009,the same year he graduated,he was awarded the “Luo Zhongli Scholarship,” after which he went on to hold solo exhibitions in Beijing,Hong Kong,and Singapore.In 2012,he was honored with the “May Fourth International Youth Art Festival Award.” After receiving his Master’s Degree in Sculpture from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2015,he held a solo exhibition the following year at Tang Contemporary Art in Beijing.He expanded his creative repertoire from single-piece sculpture to large installations that utilized space;he also actively explored the use of different materials,sending echoes of his creations throughout the art world and vaulting him to the stature of one of the most esteemed young sculptors in all of China.The unique body and object characterized in Cai Lei’s sculptures embrace his application of Surrealism in his art.His works are teeming with emotion and poeticism,utilizing outwardly hard sculpting materials to express the fragile nature of life.In an oval-shaped bathtub,a sweet young girl quietly sleeping surrounded by branches and petals,as if it is the most beautiful yet fragile moment in life,expressing the artist’s wistful reminiscence of his lost youth and painful memories in regards to maturation.Through the use of different mediums,the artist portrays a slender young hermaphrodite wrapped in a white box;the finely crafted bone structure and texture of the skin lend to the subtle realism of the piece,a true representation of life.This work has a strong visual impact on viewers while at the same time provokes their emotions about the pains of life.The inspiration behind Cai Lei’s sculptures derives from his concept of creating a true depiction of reality.Through detailed craftsmanship,he transforms the actuality of cruelty and sadness through strange yet beautiful artistic expression deeply rooted in the nature and emotions of people.
